Sedation dentistry is used to help patients that suffer from anxiety or nerves when they walk into a dental office. At Bo Stanley, DDS in Austin, TX, we offer many options to help keep patients relaxed during a dental procedure. One of the most common options used is Nitrous Oxide. Dr. Stanley works with each patient to discuss the details of the recommended procedure, and this allows patients to choose which sedation method will work best. Our patients’ health and safety is our top priority, and we want our patients to know they are in good hands and will receive the very best care.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide is also known as “laughing gas”, and is given through a mask that is placed on the mouth. Combined with oxygen this gas enters the blood stream, and helps patients to relax during their dental procedure. Nitrous Oxide is safe and effective, and allows patients to be awake during their procedure. Once the procedure is complete the gas wears off quickly, and patients can return to normal activity.

Nitrous Oxide is the safest option for sedative dentistry and most patients tolerate it well. This method is reversible, and can be adjusted up or down during the procedure. Depending on the procedure, Nitrous Oxide can be used in combination with other sedative agents.

Who Can Benefit From Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide is used for patients that have been recommended for a long procedure, or those that may need multiple dental procedures. Patients that have a strong gag reflux, or have had prior anxiety during a dental visit may also benefit from Nitrous Oxide. If patients have a low tolerance for pain, Nitrous Oxide can help a patient stay calm and relaxed during their dental procedure. This method is helpful to both adults and children, and our staff always ensures each patient is comfortable and calm during their appointments in our office.

Looking For a Sedation Dentist Near You?

Our goal at Bo Stanley, DDS, is to give each patient the very best care. If Nitrous Oxide is the right option, we will work with each patient and choose the best type of sedation dentistry that fits their needs. We want our patients to feel at home when they enter our office, and trust that we will take the very best care of them.

If you are interested in finding out more about Nitrous Oxide and how you can benefit from this method of sedation dentistry, contact our dental office in Austin, TX and our friendly staff will be happy to assist you!

Choosing the best cosmetic treatment for your teeth is an important decision. Both dental veneers and dental bonding can give patients that beautiful white smile. Knowing the differences can help patients make their decision and choose the best option. At Bo Stanley, DDS, our team provides a comprehensive cosmetic consultation to determine what cosmetic treatment options would work best. We discuss all options available to our patients, and work with each patient to help them decide which treatment fits their needs.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is typically done to repair chipped, decayed, or misshapen teeth. A composite material is used that looks natural and matches your natural teeth color. Dental bonding is cost effective, and can change the shape or your tooth, close gaps, or lengthen a tooth. This procedure can help patients get that white even smile in just one day. Local anesthesia is usually not necessary and little preparation is needed.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are tooth colored shells that are bonded to the front of teeth. Veneers are made out of porcelain or composite resin material, and are made to match the shade of your natural teeth. Veneers are typically used to correct stained, uneven, or misshapen teeth. Dental veneers provide patients with a solution to help create an even white smile. Veneers are permanent and once they are applied they are not reversible. They are durable and can last between 10-15 years if they are cared for properly.

What Is the Best Choice for Me?

Both dental bonding and dental veneers give patients an even bright white smile. Choosing which option works best will be part of the evaluation process in our office. If your teeth are in good condition and your problems are minor, dental bonding is a perfect choice. Dental bonding can be done in a single appointment, and is a simple way to correct and strengthen teeth with no preparation required. Bonding is also more cost effective compared to veneers.

If a patient has more than just simple cosmetic problems with their teeth, dental veneers may be a better choice. Dental veneers have a longer lifespan compared to dental bonding, and if patients practice good oral hygiene habits veneers can last for years. Veneers do require preparation prior to applying them to your teeth compared to bonding. Veneers are durable, and do not require constant maintenance or replacement like dental bonding.

Dr. Bo Stanley’s team always help patients choose the best option. Our patients’ are our priority, and providing patients with beautiful smiles is what we do. Our goal is to give patients that bright white smile they have always wanted.

Cavityfeat

When patients have cavities the surface of the tooth is permanently damaged, and tiny holes develop. They can be caused by bacteria, the food you eat or drink, and poor oral hygiene. The severity of the decay, and the condition of the tooth will determine what course of treatment is best. At Bo Stanley, DDS, we provide many services for our patients, and your health is our first priority.

Our team will always try and save your tooth, and clear away any infection. Many patients enter our dental office in Austin, TX with symptoms that something is wrong, but in some cases cavities are found during our normal dental exams.

If you have extensive decay, and the infection has reached the pulp area of the tooth, a root canal may be needed. Both fillings and root canals are great ways to save teeth, and prevent further decay or infection. We always choose the best treatment option depending on the condition of the tooth.

When is a Tooth Filling Needed?

Tooth fillings are used for smaller cavities that have not reached the pulp of the tooth. Fractured teeth that are not infected can also be saved using a filling. The area of decay is cleaned out, and then filled with a tooth-colored composite material. This material keeps the tooth intact, and helps to prevent further issues with the tooth in the future.

What Are Some Symptoms That I May Need a Dental Filling?

  • Here are some symptoms and signs that may indicate that you may need to get a dental filling in Austin with Bo Stanley, DDS

  • You experience pain while chewing or biting
  • Your tooth is cracked or injured
  • You have a cracked or missing filling

When is a Root Canal Needed?

Root canals may be needed if they area of decay is severe, and the infection has reached the pulp area of the tooth. If a tooth is injured or cracked, and has been left untreated, the tooth may have an infection and need root canal therapy. With root canal therapy the infected pulp area is cleaned out and sealed to restore the tooth. If needed, a dental crown may be used to fully restore the tooth’s functionality.

How Should I Go About Switching Dentists?

Once you have made the decision to switch dentists you can focus on finding your new practice. Making sure the new dentist is a good fit is important, and there are many things to consider. Think about what type of dental practice you would like for you and your family. Would a family practice work better and if so, make sure the new practice can provide all of the necessary services for your entire family. Research if the practice offers orthodontics if you have teenagers, should you need that type of treatment. This will help to eliminate the need for switching dentists again in the future.

Do your research and check out some online reviews to read about the dentist’s certifications or background. Read about the mission statement to understand the practice values, and how the practice is run. Make sure the facility is updated, and has the latest technology and advanced procedures available.

Once you have done your research and have found a dentist you think may be a good fit, schedule a visit to check out the practice. This way you can see firsthand if you are comfortable, and if your family would benefit from joining the practice.

When visiting the office take mental notes of important things such as how you are treated during your visit, and how long it takes you to get to and from the practice. Ask the staff if you can have a tour of the office to ensure the practice meets your expectations.

Feature Image 5 Oral Surgery

Oral surgery requires healing time depending on the type of oral surgery and severity of the issue. Some common oral surgeries at Bo Stanley, DDS in Austin, TX consist of tooth removal, wisdom teeth extractions, or dental implants. Any time you have an oral surgery procedure there are precautions patients must take in order to ensure proper healing. We want all of our surgeries to be a success, and once patients return home, we recommend patients follow our at home care instructions to ensure all goes well.

How Many Days Should I Not Smoke After Oral Surgery?

Many patients wonder how soon they can resume normal activity or common habits at home like smoking after oral surgery. Smoking is never recommended, but if the patient is a smoker we recommend they refrain from smoking at least 72 hours or 3 days after their surgery. During the patient’s healing period blood clots need to have time to form, and waiting to smoke ensures the mouth can heal. Smoking can disrupt the healing process, and makes the risk for complications higher. Complications such as dry sockets after tooth removal among other issues can occur if patients smoke.

Toxins from the cigarette can cause inflammation of the gums, additional pain, and swelling. Smoking causes delayed healing of oral tissue, and can lengthen the process all together. If you notice increased pain or swelling around the oral surgery area contact our dental office in Austin, Texas immediately. Any prolonged pain after oral surgery or swelling should always be addressed.

What Can Help Avoid the Urge to Smoke During the Healing Period?

If patients want to avoid complications during the healing period nicotine patches can be used. Our team also recommends to avoid any nicotine gum or chewing tobacco. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the skin and disrupts the area that is healing.

Distracting yourself with a new habit may help to avoid the urge to smoke during healing. Focus on healing and your oral hygiene routine at home to help keep your mind off the urge to smoke. We recommend rinsing with saltwater a few times a day and brushing gently while the area heals.

Implant

Dental Veneers and Dental Implants both can give patients a beautiful white smile. Deciding what restorative or cosmetic option works best for you depends on the condition of your teeth. Our staff at Bloom Family Dental in Austin, TX provides cosmetic and restorative consultations to all our patients to take a detailed look at your mouth and determine a customized treatment plan that works for you. We listen to your goals and look at all options to give you the opportunity to choose the best one.

So, what is the difference between the two? Typically, Dental Veneers and Dental Implants are used for different reasons. This all depends on how much damage a patient has to their teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are the leading restorative solution for many patients and one of the most common procedures done today. Implants are permanent and reliable giving patients the feeling that they have natural teeth. Implants are used for patients that have lost a tooth or teeth, have suffered from periodontal disease, or an injury. Dental implants take multiple appointments across a few months to complete.

Implants last upwards of 25 years or a lifetime if taken care for properly. They provide many benefits to patients, and are comfortable in the mouth. Implants allow patients to speak, eat, and function just like they would with natural teeth.

As part of our evaluation process, Dr. Bo Stanley will determine if the patient has enough bone present in the jaw to support the implants. If needed, bone grafting can be done to provide the additional support. During the implant procedure metal posts are placed in the jaw, and these act similar to artificial tooth roots. These posts provide the required support needed for the implants. Once the healing process is complete, an abutment or connector is secured on top of the implants. This allows the crown to be secured on top of the implant.

Crowns are custom made to match the color, size, and shape of your teeth. Temporary crowns are used while the patient waits for the permanent crown to be placed. Practicing good oral hygiene habits and visiting our office regularly will help to keep your implants looking and feeling great.
